At
the Recognition Ceremony for Fine Arts and Humanities, Dean
Mileur recognized Linda
J. Grabel. After earning a BA in French in 1971,
she received a law degree from George Washington University
in 1976. She is an attorney with the U.S. Department of Health
and Human Services (HHS) in Washington, D.C. Currently, Grabel
provides legal counsel to the Federal Child Support Enforcement
Program. Her work has helped state governments identify and
locate "deadbeat parents." Before focusing on child
support enforcement at HHS, for 10 years Grabel worked with
the Inspector General's office on health care fraud and abuse.
At the start of her legal carrer, she provided the agency with
legal counsel on welfare program standards and policies. Grabel
serves on the Binghamton University Foundation Board of Directors.
She is a strong supporter of the Department of Judaic Studies
and has made gifts in honor of her late parents, Rae and Charles
Grabel.
Grabel said she chose to support Harpur College
because she cherishes the flexibility she had in her education
and the relationships she had with her professors. "It's
a place that nurtured me and gave me the opportunity to try
different things, not your standard courses or activities."
She said her education prepared her well for both law school
and her career. "The education I got here stood me in good
stead for anything I wanted or tried."

Jeffrey
L. Tanenbaum received
the Alumni Award at the Science and Mathematics Recognition
Ceremony. He earned a BA in Mathematical Sciences in
1973 and a JD from the SUNY Buffalo School of Law in 1976. Following
graduation, Tanenbaum was a law clerk to the Honorable Reid
S. Moule, NYS Appellate Division, Fourth Department. He joined
the law firm of Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP in New York City
in 1978 and has been a partner for over 20 years. Tanenbaum's
areas of expertise are business, finance, restructuring and
the rights of debtors and creditors. He is a member of the Harpur
Law Council Steering Committee and hosted the 2001 New York
Metro Law Alumni Reception. Tanenbaum and his wife, Karen
(Casper) `76, have established two scholarships: the
Tanenbaum Scholarship, which goes to a Harpur College student,
and the Lester Casper Nursing Scholarship, which is in memory
of Karen's father and goes to a Decker School of Nursing student.
Tanenbaum said he has always been proud of Harpur
College's enduring reputation for outstanding academics. "It's
great to see the quality of the students and faculty remain."
Tanenbaum also noted that while it was great to be recognized
for all he has done for Harpur College, the real joy was in
giving back to the school that he said has given him so much.

Jesse
S. Faerber, who graduated in 1971 from Harpur College
with a BA in economics, was recognized at the Recognition Ceremony
for Social Sciences. In 1974, he graduated from Temple
University School of Law. As a founding partner of Fenster and
Faerber P.A., he is a civil trial lawyer who specializes in
medical malpractice cases on behalf of injured victims and their
families. Faerber is board certified in civil trail practice
by both the State of Florida and the National Board. During
his practice as a lawyer in Florida, he served as chairman of
the Judicial Nominating Commission for the Ft. Lauderdale Trial
Court and for the Fourth District Court of Appeals in West Palm
Beach. In March 2001, Faerber won the largest medical malpractice
verdict in the history of Florida. He has hosted several Binghamton
alumni events, including a 2000 law alumni reception, and supports
both Harpur College and the university golf team. Faerber is
married to Susan (Swill) `73.
Faerber said,
"I've always felt that it was part of my obligation to
return something to the university where I got such a quality
education on a scholarship that required me to pay no tuition."
He said he wanted to give something back so that other students
would receive the same opportunities he did.

Harpur Seniors Honored at Recognition
Ceremonies
Excited grads-to-be, their friends
and families packed the West Gym for Harpur College's 2004 Recognition
Ceremonies on May 15. Harpur College held separate events throughout
the day for the divisions of Fine Arts and Humanities, Science
and Mathematics, and Social Sciences so that each student would
have a chance to walk across the stage and receive personal
recognition.
Dean Mileur told Harpur College's
class of 2004, "I know you have worked long and hard and
I hope you will take pride in your own accomplishments. I know
I speak for the faculty and staff of the college when I say
that we are, every one of us, very proud of you as the latest
of Harpur's fifty-four graduating classes."
At the beginning of each ceremony,
a Harpur College alum received an award for his or her continued
dedication to Harpur College and in recognition of career accomplishments.

Composer and
teacher Ezra Laderman received an honorary Doctor of Music
(honoris causa) degree during the Harpur College
ceremony, which he said was the best 80th birthday gift
he could have imagined. He advised graduates to find their
passion in life and work on it.
"Find what
is essential in your life and find important time for it,
and get to the point where it is the highest level you can
reach and you will be fulfilled," Laderman said.
Sean Lebowitz,
a political science major (see
related story), gave the student address at Harpur College's
ceremony. He spoke of how much he and his classmates had
grown and changed since beginning college and implored the

I implore you to find those opportunities, " she said,
"to seek out that nexus of meaningful work and making
a difference."
