The Harpur College Academic Honesty Committee hears cases involving academic dishonesty in Harpur College classes, pursuant to Harpur College procedures and the University Student Academic Honesty Code.  A student who is charged with academic dishonesty will receive notice from the Chair of the Academic Honesty Committee, and will have an opportunity to participate in a hearing.  The Committee hears the evidence and makes a recommendation to the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, who makes the decision.  The student has a right to appeal this decision to the Dean of Harpur College within 30 days.  If the student is found guilty, penalties can include suspension, dismissal, probation, a letter of reprimand, and “additional actions.”

At the discretion of the class instructor, a student who is suspected of a Category I violation and who has no prior record of dishonesty may be offered the opportunity to sign an Admission of Dishonesty.  By signing the form, the student admits to the dishonesty and waives the right to a hearing before the Committee.  There is no disciplinary penalty, however the student may receive a course (i.e. grade) penalty.  Once signed by the student and instructor, the Admission form is maintained by the university in a confidential file that is checked if the student is charged with a subsequent violation.  A new case involving the same student must be heard by the Academic Honesty Committee and can result in serious penalties.
