Faculty members have various options for addressing academic dishonesty in Harpur College classes.  The Student Academic Honesty Code, adopted by the Faculty Senate in 2002, establishes guidelines for academic integrity at Binghamton University, including a definition of Category I and II violations.    Faculty should consult with the Chair of the Harpur College Academic Honesty Committee and with departmental colleagues before deciding how to proceed with a suspected violation.   For more information, see the Harpur College Faculty Academic Honesty Handbook and Faculty Handout.

A student who is suspected of a Category I violation and who has no prior record of dishonesty may be offered the opportunity to sign an Admission of Dishonesty.  Faculty should check with the Chair to confirm there is no prior record before offering a student this option.  By signing the form, the student admits to the dishonesty and waives the right to a hearing before the Committee.  Although the Admission does not carry a disciplinary penalty, the student may receive a course (i.e. grade) penalty.  Once signed by the student and instructor, the Admission form is maintained by the university in a confidential file that is checked if the student is suspected of a subsequent violation.  A new case involving the same student must be heard by the Committee and the prior Admission is considered in the penalty decision.

The Committee holds a hearing for all cases brought by faculty involving Category II violations, Category I violations in which a student has a prior record, and for Category I cases when a student declines to sign an offered Admission of Dishonesty.   A student may initiate a hearing in certain circumstances under Harpur College Academic Honesty Procedures

Faculty should consult with the Chair and communicate with the student before submitting a written charge to the Committee to initiate a hearing case.  The Harpur College Faculty Academic Honesty Handbook  provides information on how to prepare a case for the Committee.  Pending the outcome of the hearing, the instructor assigns the student a grade of Incomplete.  The student will receive notice of the hearing, and will have an opportunity to participate.  After the hearing, the Committee makes its recommendation to the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, who makes the decision; this decision can be appealed to the Dean of Harpur College.  If the student is found guilty, penalties can include suspension, dismissal, probation, a letter of reprimand, and “additional actions.”

Harpur College retains hearing records for six years, except in cases of expulsion when records are kept permanently.  Student transcripts do not report academic honesty violations.  Hearing records are checked whenever the university is asked for academic or disciplinary information by law schools, medical schools, state bar committees, and other similar entities, upon receipt of written authorization from the applicant.  Applicants to these programs must also answer application questions about their academic and disciplinary history.
