Five Harpur College Seniors Win Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence

Five Harpur College seniors received the SUNY Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence on May 2, 2001. The winners were Iyaboda A. Agboola, Emmanuel Andre, Arunabha Bhoumik, Marissa M. Gold, and Azuka Nzegwu.

The Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence was created to recognize students who have combined outstanding academic achievements and a record of contributions to the university community. Each campus president established a selection committee which reviews exemplary seniors. Nominees are then forwarded to the Chancellor’s office and are subjected to a second round of reviews. Finalists are recommended to the Chancellor to become recipients of the Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence.

This year the State University of New York honored 178 students from 53 campuses. Recipients of this year’s awards have an average GPA of 3.82. Each winner received a framed certificate and a medallion, which may be worn at commencement. A list of winners can be viewed at http://www.suny.edu/chancellorsawards.htm.

"We are proud of our winners for their academic excellence, leadership, and diverse accomplishments," said Harpur College Dean Jean-Pierre Mileur, "I extend my congratulations and wish them the best of luck in the future."

Iyabode Agboola was born in Nigeria but lives in Staten Island, New York. She has majored in Psychobiology and plans to attend medical school at New York University and pursue a career as a surgeon. She was surprised to receive the Chancellor’s Award. "I wasn’t expecting it. I didn’t know I was nominated," she said. Agboola is very pleased with her education at Harpur College "The classes were big, but it also made you more proactive, like with getting to know your professors. There’s more diversity because there are more people." She graduated Cum Laude.

Emmanuel Andre has triple majored in Economics, Philosophy, and Africana Studies. He will soon begin working in the Accelerated Development Program, a fast track to management at The Prudential. Eventually, he would like to graduate from law school and work in public policy. A native of Haiti, Andre now resides in Brooklyn. He said receiving the Chancellor’s award was a great experience "All I could think of was the long journey, from acceptance into the University to getting this award that distinguishes you from other students. I felt lucky and thankful to everyone who has supported me." He enjoyed his education at Harpur College. "I was really impressed, just in terms of my peers and professors...It feels like a family atmosphere." Andre graduated Cum Laude.

With a degree in Political Science, Arunabha Bhoumik is off to law school at Harvard University. He hopes to work on federal policy, perhaps as Council in the U.S. House of Representatives. He lives in Flushing, New York. Like the other winners, Bhoumik was surprised to receive the Chancellor’s award. "I think it was a very big honor to be recognized at the state level. It felt good to be nominated," he said. Bhoumik received departmental honors for his project "School Violence and the Disenfranchisement of America’s Minorities." He felt Harpur College gave him a well-rounded education. "I think I had a lot of room to take a variety of classes, which I enjoyed. The [academic] requirements of Harpur allow students to expand their horizons." Bhoumik graduated Summa Cum Laude.

Marissa Gold is from Niagara Falls, New York, and will begin working towards a Master’s degree in School Counseling from Syracuse University this autumn. An undergraduate Art History major, she has volunteered extensively with children. She explained, "At first I thought I wanted to teach, but then I realized I wanted to work one on one with students." Gold described receiving the Chancellor’s award as a wonderful surprise. "I didn’t even see it coming," she said, "No one told me I was nominated, then I got a letter from the Chancelor. I’m really ecstatic about it!" She looks back on Harpur College’s Art History department fondly. "It’s very small and I received quite a bit of personal attention. The faculty has made my education." Gold graduated Summa Cum Laude.

Africana Studies major Azuka Nzegwu will depart shortly for Indiana University to start a Master’s degree in Telecommunication. She was delighted to receive the Chancellor’s Award. "It was exciting to be among people who have been recognized for having done such good work." She is originally from Nigeria and resides in Endicott, New York. Nzegwu received departmental honors for her project "These Women Are Brave," the result of field work in Nigeria during the summer of 2000. She enjoyed her years at Harpur College. "I’m very glad for what I have learned here, especially with certain faculties who have maximized my undergraduate education." Nzegwu graduated Cum Laude.

Harpur College Alumni Recognized for Excellence

Four alumni were recognized for their continuing dedication to their alma mater at Harpur College’s Recognition Ceremonies on May 19, 2001 in the West Gym. The recognition awards are given annually to alumni for exceptional contributions to their profession, or for outstanding public service to the high ideals and effective action that the College seeks to encourage. They demonstrate the lasting value of an arts and sciences education and provide an important role model for today’s Harpur College students.

Susan and Stanley Reifer both received alumni awards in the area of Social Sciences. Mrs. Reifer is a 1965 graduate of Harpur College with a B.A. in Sociology and earned an MSW at Columbia University in 1967. Today she is a psychotherapist, treating individuals and couples. She is also adjunct faculty at Columbia University, supervising the field work of Social Work students. Mrs. Reifer is a member of the Harpur College Advisory Council and its Public Relations Subcommittee.

Stanley Reifer is a 1964 graduate of Harpur College with a B.A. in History. He received a master’s degree in Russian history from New York University in 1966 and completed doctoral studies there in public administration. He owns Reifer Management and Development Corp., a real estate company in the New York metropolitan area.

Harpur College gave the alumni award for Science and Math to Rich Alpern '69. He majored in Psychology at Harpur and graduated from New York University Law School in 1972. Alpern has been Special Counsel in Sullivan & Cromwell's Tax Group since 1990. He is the co-author of the book, 2000 Guide to Change in Control - Protecting Companies and Their Executives, published by Harcourt Professional Publishing. Harpur College Seniors Enjoy the Spotlight

Hundreds of parents, families and friends gathered in the West Gym on May 19, 2001 for recognition ceremonies honoring Harpur College’s class of 2001. The divisions of Fine Arts and Humanities, Science and Mathematics, and Social Sciences each held separate festivities throughout the day.

Four alumni received awards for their ongoing service to Harpur College and outstanding achievements in their professional fields (see related story). Dean Mileur presented seniors receiving departmental honors with gold cords to wear with their cap and gown at commencement. Seventy-six seniors received Foundation Awards for their achievements in various academic subjects, campus activities, or community service. Most importantly, each graduating senior had their moment in the sun: the opportunity to walk across the stage, shake hands with Dean Mileur, get photographed, and accept a congratulatory message signed by President DeFleur.

Recognition ceremonies are the last event on campus for seniors. They graduated the next day, concluding four years at Harpur College. May the class of 2001 look upon their undergraduate years with the same enthusiasm and admiration with which Harpur College educated them.

Harpur College Alumnus Stewart J. Paperin '68, '69 Earns Honorary Doctorate from B.U.

Binghamton University bestowed its highest honor, a Doctorate in Humane Letters, upon Harpur College alumnus Stewart J. Paperin `68, `69 at Commencement on May 20, 2001. Paperin described the experience as "a terrific surprise." BU also granted honorary doctorates to Robert Pinsky, former Poet Laureate of the United States, and Loretta C. Ford, founding dean and currently dean emeritus of the School of Nursing at University of Rochester’s Medical Center.

Paperin received a bachelor of science in Business and Economics in 1968 and a master of science in Management the following year. He has great memories of his college years. He met his wife Janet (Press) '68, a Sociology major, in the Newing dining hall during their freshman year. "Harpur was home. It was a very small school then," he reminisced, "I started in the summer and there were only 500 students around. I proceeded to spend most of my time playing bridge in what was called the snack bar and I never went to class."

It’s hard to believe this success story ever skipped class. Paperin is currently executive vice president of the Soros Foundation and advisor to Soros Fund Management on its investments in Russia. He also manages the activities and operations of the Soros network of more than 40 foundations in Central and Eastern Europe, the United States, Africa, and Latin America. His prior positions included serving as C.F.O. of publicly traded N.Y. Stock Exchange companies in the telecommunications and computer industries, as senior financial officer for Pepsico International, and as a management consultant focused on both public and private organizations. He also serves on the boards of several emerging Internet and technology and natural resources companies, is a member of the board of directors of economic policy institutes in Ukraine and Bulgaria, and is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.

When Paperin, his wife, Janet, and daughter, Kim, returned to Binghamton for Commencement, he was delighted to see Professor Emeritus Morris Budin, with whom he studied Urban Planning. Budin remembers Paperin as a very hard worker. "Stewart is a remarkable guy and the interesting thing I find is his versatility," said Budin, "He can think!"

Paperin said returning to his alma mater for this momentous occasion was "a little unreal" and felt wonderful. "Harpur College is a wonderful school in which I have tremendous pride." We are pleased to return the compliment.
