Harpur College Professor Coates Translates West African Novel

Harpur College Professor Carrol Coates has translated Waiting for the Vote of the Wild Animals by Ahmadou Kourouma, granting the English-speaking world access to a novel he describes as "outrageously funny."

According to Coates, "The career of Koyaga, the protagonist of 'Waiting for the Vote of the Wild Animals' is closely modeled on the career of Gnassingbe Eyadema, dictator of Togo. It is no coincidence that the novel was published in France in September 1998, shortly after the celebration of the 30th anniversary of Eyadema's seizure of power (1967) in Togo. In addition, Kourouma also inserts satirical portraits of many of the late Dictator-Presidents: Mobutu (Zaire/Congo), Bokassa (Central African Republic), Houphouet-Boigny (Cote D'Ivoire), and others.

Professor Coates chose to translate Waiting for the Vote of the Wild Animals because he was fascinated by both the evocation of traditional African cultures and by Kourouma's irreverant view of the abuse of power by African dictators, abetted and supported by both West (France and the U.S.) and the East (the former USSR).

Professor Coates reports that once he is well into translating a novel, he finds himself actually living the situation and sometimes identifying with a given character. He has also translated several Haitian novels, including General Sun, My Brother, by Jacques Stephen Alexis. He is presently working on the translation of Alexis's third novel, In the Flicker of an Eyelid, which will be published later this year.

Since 1963, Professor Coates has taught French literature for Harpur College, specializing in works written in French outside of France: North and West Africa, the Caribbean, Quebec, and the Indian Ocean. He enjoys introducing students to a new language and varied cultures. Dr. Coates is a member of the American Translators Association. He is a vital part of Harpur College's 50-year tradition of multiculturalism in higher education.

Harpur College Alumnus
Launches New Internet Business...

Harpur College alumnus, Aitan Weinberg, '96, and his partner, Brad Shulman, (SOM '95), have started a new software company that will simplify Internet research. Based in New York City, noteClip adds a personal online notebook to your Web browser, helping you organize information that you find on the web and making the whole research process more efficient.

noteClip was inspired by one of Weinberg's partners who was doing a lot of internet research for his job as a financial analyst. Explained Weinberg, "He`d print out 50 pages just to get one paragraph to show his boss, so we built a tool that would help him gather just the information that he wants." The product's name was an easy decision. "It's a note taking tool that allows you to clip information from the web, so we came up with noteclip. The strength of noteClip comes in its ability to pull information from multiple sites into a single note: "It's great to use when researching across more than one site. If you're investigating a serious topic, or even just planning a vacation using the web as a resource, noteClip is great."

The business continues to grow. Weinberg and his partners are licensing the software to law firms and investment banks. "We recognize that these firms do a lot of research on the web."

Weinberg majored in Economics and minored in Computer Science. He remembers his economics Professor, Dr. Solomon Polachek, former dean of Harpur College. His education prepared Weinberg well for the rigors of owning a business. "It's a lot of fun and hard work and requires intense dedication, unyielding motivation and total devotion. It`s challenging, but very rewarding at the same time."

Weinberg's partner, Shulman, agrees. "I've always wanted to own my own business. There's something magical and very rewarding about building one. It requires a lot of hard work and really, a strong belief in the business that you're trying to build. You have to be self-motivated. To be successful, you really have to love what you're doing."

HARPUR STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

Lisa Iglesias, 2001

"I feel like an art major." That is how Lisa Iglesias, '01, summarizes her experience at Harpur College. A native of Queens, New York, Lisa was attracted to the school by a scholarship, in-state tuition, and its impressive reputation.

Looking back on her education, Lisa is glad she studied at Binghamton and enjoyed the small atmosphere of Harpur College. "It's easy to get involved," she said, "I've made a lot of good friends here. I think the student population is motivated and intelligent."

Following Lisa's anticipated graduation in May 2001, she plans to move to Providence, Rhode Island and get involved in the community's thriving art scene. "In Providence, there are so many universities and lots of people are starting galleries," she explained. She plans to pursue a Master's degree in Fine Arts or Education.

Lisa is pictured with her self portrait which hung outside the Harpur College Dean's Office. She chose mirrors as a unique medium for her oil paintings. "A mirror gives the painting an amorphous quality, in that it responds to every change in its environment. It's important to me to have a sense of integration of the viewer into the artwork itself."

Lisa Iglesias' confidence and talent in art was nurtured in Harpur College's small environment where students receive lots of personal attention. She will especially miss Art Professors Linda Sokolowski and Katherine Niles. Both have been very supportive. "I've been very connected as a student of the humanities."

Harpur Alumna, Roberta C. Pike '83, Named "Woman of the Year"

Harpur College alumna, Roberta (Cohen) Pike, '83, was named "Woman of the Year" by the League of Mutual Taxi Owners on February 20, 2001 for her years of dedication and service to the transportation industry.

Pike received a B.A. in Political Science from Harpur College in 1983 and a Juris Doctor from St. John's University School of Law in 1986. She has been involved in the transportation industry for over 15 years, through her representation of numerous dispatching bases, as a director of the Black Car Assistance Corporation, and as a member of the Taxicab, Limousine & Paratransit Association and the National Limousine Association.

Since 1989, Pike has been a partner with the law firm of Pike and Pike in Bellmore, New York, which focuses on the legal and business needs of mid-sized companies, many of which are involved in the transportation industry. "I specialize in commercial / corporate / business law in the transportation industry, both litigation and non-litigation," she explained.

Pike has spoken extensively on employment-relation issues as well as issues of interest to the transportation industries. Her articles on business and legal topics have appeared in the Black Car News, Taxi & Livery Magazine, Mover's News, and various newsletters.

Pike has many happy memories of her years at Binghamton. She recalls living in the commons, playing many sports, having fun with her Delta Tau sisters, and of course, "the pub!" Pike feels Harpur College's strong academic requirements served her well. She reminisced, "I learned to balance education and my social life and not lose touch with the real world."

In her spare time, Pike enjoys spending time with her husband and law partner, Peter, and their three children.
