Harpur Celebrates Homecoming 2002
From music to lacrosse, Homecoming 2002 had something for everyone.

The event-packed weekend started with a party to celebrate the reopening of the newly christened Susan '65 and Stanley '64 Reifer Gallery on Friday, October 11. (See story below.) That evening, the Athletic Hall of Fame inducted four new members while the Pre-Madness Tailgate Party got students in the Homecoming Spirit in the Peace Quad.

Alana Golden '03 earned the Exemplary Student of the Year award at Latenight Madness. A senior in the School of Management, Golden will receive a $1,700 scholarship sponsored by the Alumni Association and the University Foundation.

Saturday, October 12 started with a Founders' Club breakfast in the Susquehanna Room to honor Harpur College alumni who graduated between 1948 and 1952. Many retired faculty who taught during Harpur's early years also attended. Later that morning, Dean Mileur met with his Advisory Council, comprised of alumni who advise him regarding issues of importance related to Harpur's visibility and reputation both locally and nationally.

Alumni had the chance to compete in softball, baseball, tennis, and lacrosse while the University men's soccer team battled the University of Vermont.

The women's alumnae lacrosse team played against the University varsity team. The alumni were thrilled to see how much the program has grown, from a club sport to Division I.

If they weren't still full from brunch, alumni and students feasted on spiedes, smoothies, and plenty of other goodies at the Bearcat Barbecue. Harpur College delighted students and alumni with two large tables of nostalgic photos and free cider, doughnuts, and candy apples, donated by the Cider Mill in Endicott.

At 4:00p.m., Binghamton University dedicated a new Memorial Courtyard to the fifteen alumni who died on September 11, 2001. See related story.

Alumni musicians Matthew Zachary (Greenzweig) '96, Mara Hitner '98, Mike Van Allen '96, Brian Friedman '98 and Lynne Camenga '94 ended the day with a concert to benefit the Alumni Association Scholarship Fund and Music Department Scholarship.

Golfers started Sunday, October 13 with a tournament to benefit the Alumni Association Scholarship Fund. Harpur College fielded two teams that together brought home the championship cup. The day also included Residential Community Brunches and a comedy performance by Jim Breuer.

Harpur College wishes to thank the many alumni and students who came to Homecoming 2002 and made the weekend so memorable. We hope you'll be back next year!

University Gallery Gets a New Name and a New Look

Harpur College alumni Susan `65 and Stanley `64 Reifer (pictured left) saw their generosity, commitment and appreciation for art come to fruition when the newly remodeled gallery named in their honor opened on Friday, October 11, 2002.

Two years in the works, the Susan and Stanley Reifer Gallery has been vastly updated, including:

  • Extension of the mezzanine by about 1,000 square feet and made handicapped accessible.
  • Addition of a 20' x 16' double sided wall to create more display space.
  • Creation of three windows facing campus.
  • Replacement of the staircase bannister.
  • Improvements to the temperature, humidity, and security systems.

The Reifers previously donated enough money for the New York State Construction Fund to make a matching grant that paid for the renovation. In addition, they gave several pieces of Asian art from their private collection, including furniture, bronze and ceramic vessels, several Japanese woodcut prints, and a vase from between 4,000 B.C. and 8,000 BC

"We're very, very excited about this," said Mrs. Reifer at a reception in the couple's honor at the gallery's opening. "I'm delighted we could contribute this to the University. They've put so much work into it. I couldn't be happier."

Marcia Steinbrecher, director of development for the Anderson Center, Art Museum and Library, said the renovations were a "large group effort." She has enjoyed working with the Reifers to bring their vision to reality and extended her gratitude to the entire museum staff for their dedication and hard work.

The Reifer's donations will join many other beautiful works of art collected over the gallery's history. Lynn Gamwell, director of the museum, said the renovations included extra space for student-curated shows and new acquisitions.

The Susan and Stanley Reifer Gallery is located in Fine Arts 213 and open Tuesday through Saturday, 1:00p.m. - 4:00p.m. and Thursdays until 7:00p.m. For more information, please call 607-777-2634.

WHRW Remembers Paul Battaglia `00 at Homecoming

Homecoming was also a time for reflection when WHRW dedicated its new facilities in the new University Union to the memory of Paul Battaglia `00, who perished in the World Trade Center tragedy on September 11, 2002. Battaglia served as General Manager of WHRW from 1998 - 2000.

Many of his family members (pictured right) and friends traveled to Binghamton for the occasion.

Battaglia's family traveled to Binghamton for the rededication of WHRW's new facilities.

Battaglia was also among the fifteen alumni whom the University remembered in the new Memorial Courtyard dedication ceremony later that afternoon. (See related story.)

Daniel Jan Walikis `77, public affairs manager of WHRW, praised Battaglia's interpersonal and leadership skills. Normally, students serve as station General Manager for one year, but Battaglia served for two because, according to Walikis, "he was that good."

Walikis also remembers Battaglia having fun around the station. When Walikis would play his annual holiday show on WHRW, Battaglia would always ask him to play his favorite song, "Dominic the Italian Christmas Donkey," by Lou Monte.

Scott Kidder `88 believes Battaglia would have been proud of the new facilities. "When Paul was GM, he was already talking about the new station, but that was his nature. He was a planner."

Adam Schechter `01 said Battaglia had a good rapport with BU administrators and helped WHRW get as much space as possible. "He took the initial step to ensure the station would be well taken care of in the future," said Schechter.

Kidder agreed. He said, "Paul would have loved to see this."

Foreign Language Expert Speaks at Harpur College Dean's Workshop

Prof. Heidi Byrnes challenged instructors to teach culture as well as conversation in her presentation at the Harpur College Dean's Foreign Language Pedagogy Workshop.

On October 10, the Harpur College Dean's Foreign Language Pedagogy Workshop brought Heidi Byrnes, professor of German at Georgetown University, to campus to present "Collegiate Language Study and Collegiate Language Departments."

To an audience of students, faculty, and local high school foreign language teachers, Byrnes talked about shifting the focus of foreign language studies from conversational proficiency to fluency in culture. "Just having a language requirement isn't enough," she said, "Universities should pursue awareness of another cultural area in terms of the language being used there."

Byrnes said foreign language departments wanted to leave behind old-fashioned grammar drills and rote memorization, but in the process, overemphasized what she called "transactional language."

"We need a sophisticated way of looking at another culture through its language," said Byrnes. Foreign language instructors can do this by integrating speaking, reading, writing and cultural habits, such as idioms, relationships, and formalities.

Byrnes said the goal of a college education should be "multiple literacies," where students are well-informed in not just a second language, but in several different subjects.

Rosmarie Morewedge, associate professor of German, agreed with Byrnes wholeheartedly and feels Harpur College is already on the right track. "Language is culture," said Morewedge. Harpur College's faculty in foreign languages, literatures and cultures encourage cultural fluency by promoting interdisciplinary courses in literature, history, and philosophy and encouraging students to study abroad.

Professor Byrnes has authored several publications on foreign language instruction. Most recently, she edited Learning Foreign and Second Languages: Perspectives in Research and Scholarship (1998, The Modern Language Association). She is one of several renowned linguists who will speak on campus this year for the Foreign Language Pedagogy Workshop.

Sungdai Cho, associate professor of Korean, who organized the workshop explained, "The critical nature of the issue was driven home by September 11, which led the US Department of Education to put greater focus on the role of critical languages in strengthening the American security and economy." Those "critical languages" taught at Harpur College include Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Russian. The Workshop will also include specialists in German and Spanish.

The next workshop presentation will be "Why is Korean a 'Category 4' language? What should we do about it?" by Prof. Ho-Min Sohn of the University of Hawaii on October 31 at 5:00p.m. in SL 212.

The Foreign Language Pedagogy Workshop is co-sponsored by German, Russian and East Asian Languages, Classical and Near Eastern Studies, Romance Languages and Literatures, Center for Teaching and Learning, Languages Across the Curriculum, Translation, Research and Interpretation Program, Asian and Asian American Studies Program, and the Harpur College Dean.
